YA novel explores race in America, police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement

Angie ThomasJoin the SKYCTC book club Spring 2019 as we read The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.

Angie Thomas was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi.  In 2015 she was one of five recipients of the Walter Dean Myers Grant, which was awarded by We Need Diverse Books, a non-profit organization whose goal is to "help produce and promote literature that reflects and honors the lives of all young people."  Angie used the grant to buy a computer and wrote The Hate U Give, a YA novel inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Hate U Give is the story of 16 year old Starr, who is the sole witness to the shooting of her friend, Khalil, by a police officer.  The ensuing court case gains national attention and Starr must decide what she will say on the witness stand. This book explores the issues of justice, racism, violence, ethics, and morality through Starr's authentic voice.
