Academic Video Online is the most comprehensive video subscription available to libraries. It delivers ~ 68,000 titles spanning the widest range of subject areas including anthropology, business, counseling, film, health, history, music, and more.
Academic Video Online includes a variety of video material available with curricular relevance: documentaries, interviews, feature films, performances, news programs and newsreels, demonstrations, and raw footage. Patrons will find thousands of award-winning films, including Academy®, Emmy®, and Peabody® winners. Academic institutions will find the most frequently used films for classroom instruction, plus newly released films and previously unavailable archival material.
The enhanced video experience is organized by Channels rather than discplines or subjects. They include:
Alexander Street supports standard linking to content using Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) launch URLs. With LTI your instructors can more easily embed links to content and users can access the content using their credentials on the learning management system.
With LTI there is no need to add proxy prefixes to the content page request and no need for the user to sign into the proxy. Simply use a provided LTI launch URL and paste it into the course page on your LMS.
From the Share menu at the top of the interface, you will be given an option to embed:

Academic Video Online (AVON) spans a wide range of subject areas. Includes content like documentaries, films, and demonstrations from publishers like the BBC, PBS, and Sony.
Pair video with ebooks, news, articles, and other information from ProQuest Databases, and our other databases from our Database A - Z List!
When you click on our AVON database link, you land on a search page where you can start searching for videos.
Use the Menu (hamburger icon) in the top left to explore Channels or go Home to explore different browsing options!
When the video player launches, you will experience the video in a cinematic view.
From left to right and, below the video progress bar the controls include the length of video in hours and minutes, volume control, play/pause, closed caption, settings, video information and full screen option.
The left and right arrow beside the play button move to the previous or next video. To advance the current video, use the video progress bar to slide forward or back.
Also available is the ability cite the video using copy/paste in APA, MLA, Chicago, or full citation. Searching the transcript box will reduce the size of the video and open the transcript on the right side of the screen.
The thumbnail images to additional video content at the bottom will collapse after a few seconds of viewing, offering an even larger video viewing experience.
The top of the video player allows the viewer to navigate through the various menu options such as Transcript, Details, Clips, Share, and Cite.
The diagonal arrow pointing down and to the right indicates that two of these options (transcript and citing) are able to be launched from the bottom right commands.
Searching is easy and intuitive. Simply type what you're looking for into the search box You won't even need to type the whole word to discover what's available!
In the example below, when searching "environ", you will see two columns. Left for individual videos and right for related, curated channels. Clicking on a video or channel will take you to that result. Hitting enter after typing in your search term will take you to a list of individual video results.
To understand a bit about how searching works, consider the following things:
Searching strategies below can be used on combination with each other.
Double Quotes (restriction of phrase matching): Using quotes around a search term will limit the results to those words being found directly next to each other in the results. Searching will take place anywhere in the title, description, transcript, and metadata.
AND, OR, NEAR, +, - (Boolean operators): 1. operators must be in CAPS; 2. plus and minus signs must have a space before them.
Field Qualifications: the search box can be used to directly narrow a search to a particular field. There is NO space between the colon and the search term.
Truncation and Wild Card: asterisks and question marks can be used to offer options when you want to expand a search for word ending variability
Range Queries: you can use a range of dates to narrow down searches prior to waiting for search results to filter
After executing your search, a visual arrangement of results will appear. The red filter/facet toggle (looks like a funnel) in the upper center of the screen will reveal many choices for defining and refining a search by Subject, Publisher, Person, Content Type, and Release Date using the slider.
Add filters by clicking on them. Remove them by clicking on the X that will appear next to them after you've enabled them. The large, red X will collapse the filter menu.
From the results, the lower case i can be clicked to find out more on a video/film without actually launching the film in the cinematic experience.
In the information preview, you can see narrators and producers (hyperlinked for ease in launching a new, specific search), length, and description. Clicking on Channels on the right, bottom will take you to channels related to this video title.
The red dot (just above) can be slid to preview additional locations in the video to determine as a method of previewing. Hitting play will launch the video (from whereever the red dot is) in full screen mode
