William Kamkwamba was born in Africa in the Republic of Malawi. At age 14, William built a windmill using instructions from a library book and spare parts found at the garbage dump. This windmill produced electricity to power lights and a radio in his family home. Since then he has built a solar-power water pump to supply drinking water to his village, as well as two other windmills. Today, William is a student at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.
